Catastrophic failure occurs to axle of mobile machine resulting in equipment down time and disruption of traffic. Safety of remaining vehicle axles called into question and Beach Wagner called in to determine short term and long term measures to be taken.
Bearing sizing and design review accompanied by physical examination of the failed units indicate early failure due to inappropriate tapered roller bearing arrangement resulting in high local roller loading under applied moment due to lateral loads.
